Celtic Magic

The Celts believed the physical world and the spiritual world were completely intertwined. Trees were the perfect vehicle for this, and the Druids had a special affinity with trees. Celtic time marker was a 19-year cycle It was called the great year. It was marked by the sun and the moon being on the same spot every 19 years. The other cycle used was an 84-year cycle. In Celtic spirituality the worlds were seen to be completely intertwined Nature was observed as the oracle of the spirit world. The land was an open entity which was willing to dialogue with humans.

 

The word for spell is a Gallic word bright. Eolas means knowledge but more than that knowledge in general meant magical knowledge and ability. The word for magical act is druidheachd. Knowledge implies much more than hard data and implies a magical quotient. The henge site s that we today talk of as Celtic were pre-celtic and may have been used also by the Celtic society.

 

Their were three classes of practitioner :

1  Druids- philosophers/ theologians and dealing with the immortality of the soul and natural phenomenon.

2 Bards- Poets and storytellers and musicians they were charged with histories and eulogies and satire.

3 Morters – Naturalists experts in divination and sacrifice.

 

Women had equal status as Druids and were know warrior leaders and well as Queens in their own right. There were isles known as the Sunset isles these were island that women went to for part of the  year were they studied and practices the healing and divination arts.

Natural oak groves were the halls of ceremonies. Oak trees were the druidic tool that was used to divine and commune with the spirit world. Nemeton was a word used to describe a clearing in the wood, a shrine a sanctuary for ceremony or education. Writing was not trusted so an education of up to 20 years was needed to memorise all the clan histories and the various other data for the practice of the arts. The Celtic religion works with the other world do intimately that very little magic took  place through  planned human volition
